Custom Jewelry is when we collaborate with the customer to come up with a unique design. The customer might have something specific in mind, or they may leave the design process up to us. Usually the custom work is when someone wants to use their existing stones to put together a special piece. Most of the time you are not going to walk into a store and see a ready made piece that will fit multiple stones of varying sizes... and that's where we come in! We will look to see if we can find something that is pre-made, but if we can't find one, or if the design of the piece isn't what you had in mind, we move on to the next step, a custom design.
Working with the customer we come up with a design, and a Computer Aided Design (CAD) rendering is produced. This 3D rendering can show the design in multiple angles. At this point any changes that might need to be made can be made. The CAD allows us to make changes inside the computer program, rather than having to make any changes in the actual wax, which saves both time and money. Once a design is finalized, the CAD model is changed into a wax (computer aided manufacturing, CAM), and is cast in the agreed upon metal. We then finish the piece and set the stones. The usual time frame for a custom designed piece is about 4 to 6 weeks, depending on how long it takes to finalize the design.
We also can hand carve a wax, in those cases where the CAD isn't the best approach for the design.
